What you can do to help....
Midwifery supporters have been instrumental in advocating for midwives in Ontario. In March 2002, approximately 200 midwives, midwifery supporters and their children marched at Queen’s Park in an attempt to guarantee timely government funding for newly graduated midwifery students. Changes in the funding schedule at the Ministry of Health meant that these new midwives-to-be would have to wait seven months after graduation before they would be able to work as midwives. Consumers in Ontario found this unacceptable. Midwives were, and are, in high demand. Women and their families wanted a guarantee of timely funding from the Ministry of Health, and while they were marching, that’s exactly what they got! The Ministry spokesperson, Brian Patterson, announced within minutes of marching that funding would not be delayed so that newly graduated midwifery students would be able to start working right away. Thank you to all of you who participated! Never underestimate your power to make a difference.
