Meet the Team

I come to midwifery with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery from Ryerson Polytechnic University (2004). It was with great excitement that I began working with Midwives of York Region immediately after graduation. Having completed several clinical placements at various clinics throughout the GTA, it was always my desire to return to my home community and support women and their partners as they embark upon or continue their journey into parenthood.

My interest in midwifery began with the birth of my second child, Emma, in 1994. I enjoyed the informed choice and continuity of care that was provided to me by my midwife. Since that time midwifery has been an integral part of my life. While waiting to begin the Midwifery Education Programme, I became a consumer advocate for midwifery at both the local and provincial levels in Ontario. Today, I continue my advocacy in the beautiful province of Newfoundland where midwifery is not yet in place.

In my free time I’m enjoying learning to knit, reading and sailing on Cook’s Bay.

Hi, I’m Carolyn Scott, I was born and raised in Toronto. For the longest time I have had an interest in health care. At first, it was from a global perspective , and that is why I pursued a degree in Anthropology from the University of Western Ontario. It was shortly after completing my degree that I began to learn more about midwifery in Ontario. I was so grateful when I was accepted into the Midwifery Education Programme at McMaster University. I graduated in 2002, and started working at Cambridge Midwives.

It was during my time in Cambridge that I got married and had my daughter. We later moved to York Region and my son was born. My children are 22 months apart, they keep us busy, you never know what new things might happen. In 2015, my husband and I bought a hobby farm in King Township, neither us have a farming back ground. But we are learning a lot, we started with a puppy, and now have bees, chickens and sheep. So when I am not enjoying my career as a midwife you will find me keeping busy with my kids or with our animals on our little farm.

I was born and raised in the town of Georgina, and after a ten year hiatus from the area, the bright lights of York Region called me back home. In 2013 I joined Midwives of York Region and the great team at Southlake and I couldn’t be happier!

Before completing the Midwifery Education Program at Laurentian University, I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Rights and Women’s studies from Carleton University in Ottawa. After working in the area of women’s rights in Canada, the appeal of working and supporting women one-on-one through midwifery care grew stronger. This is when I started my training to become a midwife. Following graduation from the midwifery program, I worked in the Ottawa area before making my way to Aurora to join the team at Midwives of York Region.

I am excited to provide care to the women and families served by the Midwives of York Region. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of such a special time in your lives.

Prior to becoming a midwife through the Midwifery Education Programme at Ryerson University, I practiced as an RN in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a very busy urban children’s hospital in Israel.

I was born and raised in Riga, Latvia. At the age of sixteen I immigrated to Israel. I’ve been dreaming of becoming a midwife since the age of fifteen when I witnessed the birth of my brother with the help of a midwife. Being a midwife is my call and I am very passionate about my work.

I believe that every woman should feel supported, empowered and respected during her journey to motherhood. I am grateful to be a part of this amazing journey. I am looking forward to working with you.

My name is Marzieh Rostam, I’m a senior midwife and clinical educator with over twenty years of experience.

I got started in this field because of my passion for woman’s health and childbirth. I try to provide excellent care to my clients throughout the labor and postpartum period. I support their journey with breastfeeding and helping them in making informed decisions.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in midwifery in Iran in 1996 and moved to Canada in 1997. Here, I finished the IMPP (International Midwifery pre registering program) through Ryerson in 2002. I worked as a registered Midwife in the Peel and HaltonHills area since 2003 for 20 years. I also completed my MSc in Community health at the University of Toronto in 2014. In addition , I worked as a Hospitalist at Markham Stouffville (AMU )for the last two years.

I also have a strong passion to teach and mentor students and new fellows .

Having a balanced life is important to me. When I am not at work, I like to walk on trails and in parks listening to music and podcasts. I love to travel to see new places and discover new cultures. Spending quality time with friends and family is also very important to me.

I am so exited to join the Midwives of York Region and look forward to meeting you in person one day soon !

Marzieh Rostam RM MScCH

I was born and raised in York Region and am excited to continue to be involved in the community that I call home. Prior to studying Midwifery, I graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Art and Science degree in Nutrition and International Development. I developed a passion for relational clinical care with a women-centered focus through my involvement in health care provision in Ecuador and Uruguay. These experiences lead me to pursue a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in Midwifery through the McMaster Midwifery Education Program. I was drawn to midwifery because of its unique emphasis on continuity of care, client-centered care and informed choice given to clients. During my training, I completed placements at Southlake Regional Healthcare Centre, McMaster Children’s Hospital, Markham Stouffville Hospital as well as several other communities across Southern Ontario. Following graduation, I worked with Uxbridge Community Midwives before joining the Midwives of York Region.

In my spare time I love adventuring outdoors, whether hiking, camping or canoeing. I am an avid traveler and enjoy exploring the beauty of nature. I am so grateful to have the privilege of sharing in your journey. I look forward to meeting you and being part of your pregnancy and birth experience.

I first knew I wanted to be a midwife when I read over the description of what the job entailed in my grade 10 career class, I was intrigued. What I didn’t know at the time was how much I would fall in love with it.

In 2015 I graduated with a bilingual Bachelor of Sciences in Midwifery from Laurentian University. In 2016, I welcomed my daughter into my own hands under the care of midwives. I started my career in Halton Region where I experienced first hand how demanding but really rewarding midwifery can be. In 2018, our family grew when my son was born at home, just in time for Halloween!

I worked for some time at Family Care Midwives in Vaughan which gave my family the opportunity to move back to York Region which is where both my partner and I grew up!

Now I am excited to join Midwives of York Region! I look forward to sharing in your joy as your own families grow, two tiny feet at a time

Hi, I’m Karey Goheen. I was born and raised in Simcoe County. I graduated
from the Midwifery Education Program in 2012 and have been practicing
midwifery ever since. Prior to entering midwifery program, I completed a degree
in Women’s Studies and Sociology from Trent University. Being a midwife and
servicing our community is a great privilege and one I don’t take for granted.
When I’m not working as a midwife, I’m a busy mom of 2 kids, I love to run,
workout, and spend time at my family cottage. I look forward to meeting you all
soon!

I first became intrigued by a career in Midwifery while studying Anthropology at Columbia
University, where I graduated in 2006. After some volunteer work and travel in South America and Asia I returned to Canada to study in the Midwifery Education Program at McMaster University, receiving a BHSc with honours in 2016. Since that time, I have studied and practiced in a diverse set of communities including Owen Sound, Barrie and North York. What I cherish most about being a midwife is the opportunity to empower families to choose their birth story. I’m excited to be joining this group of passionate and like-minded midwives as we continue to support and celebrate the diverse set of families in York Region.
My incredibly supportive family includes my partner and 3 young kids. We love hiking, camping, paddling and all things outdoors.

I graduated from Georgian College in 2001 with a degree in the Office Administration – Medical program. I started working as a Medical Secretary in 2001 and spent the last 15 years working in the Maternal Child field. I recently started here at The Midwives of York Region and I am truly blessed to work with such an incredible team of midwives and all of the amazing families.

I live in Georgina with my husband and 2 wonderful children Benjamin and Abigail. We enjoy spending our evenings at the baseball diamond or at the soccer pitch watching them achieve their dreams. We also enjoy spending our down time with our Families, camping or going to our family cottage.

My name is Michelle. I was born in Newmarket at York County hospital. Southlake Regional Health Centre as we now know it. I love this always growing community and am proud to call it home.

I live in Newmarket with my outnumbered husband. We have three daughters and another old girl. A very large rescue dog. Her name is Missy. She’s a Newfoundland Mastiff cross and she believes she’s the matriarch of our household.

Although I’m new to MOYR I have a decade of medical and family practice experience. My favorite part of this career has always been you. I love working with the public and I am honored to be part of this amazing team. I look forward to helping all of you in your journeys through pregnancy and childbirth.
